Why am I taking emergency response training?

John Nunley · June 22, 2026

I’ve decided that I want to put myself in a position where I can help my community.

If you have a beating heart and live on planet Earth, you’ll know it’s been hot lately. No matter where you are, we’ve been getting record temperatures. I’ve had friends in California, London, and even Alaska pointing out that it’s noticeably hotter.

Frankly, heat waves seem to be happening more and more often lately. Every few weeks it seems that we start hitting record temperatures, and I have to find ways to stay cool. It’s gotten me thinking about ecological disasters, and the effect that it has on community.

Someday, disaster will strike. It could be an especially bad heatwave, or an earthquake, or a tornado, or a meteor impact. The lives people thought they had will be interrupted, if not completely upended. Some may die. Others will need help.

I don’t know if I could forgive myself if I wasn’t in the position to be the one to help.

Many cities offer Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) at regular times throughout the year. I’ve recently signed up for my city’s program. When I tell people about this, sometimes they ask me why. I say, it’s always good to be prepared.

You never know when disaster will strike.
